Double Fine opens indie game publishing
Double Fine is adding "independent games publisher" to its expanding list of industry roles.
The company offered promotion, distribution, and even working space in its San Francisco offices to developer MagicalTimeBean so it could finish up work on Escape Goat 2, which released on PC Tuesday.
Double Fine is looking to bring on additional developers with a wide variety of needs, from crowdfunding to porting to promotion.
"Our goal is to help indies build their own community and empower them with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed on their own," Double Fine chief operating officer Justin Bailey told Game Informer.
The company hopes to use its 14 years of experience working with publishers and creating its own independent projects to make the process smoother for smaller developers. It's meant to be an alternative to traditional publishing or licensing deals which can create " a certain codependence," Bailey said.
"That's the alternative we want to offer - a way for indies to stay indie," Bailey said.
The studio's internal projects include Broken Age Part 2, Massive Chalice, and Costume Quest 2, which will be published through Majesco's Midnight City label.
